Michál Cohen

Walters & Cohen Architects / Co-Founder

Michál is co-founder of Walters & Cohen Architects. She was born and educated in South Africa, setting up Walters & Cohen with Cindy Walters in 1994. Michál believes in the value of meaningful stakeholder consultation to inform the brief, challenge clients in the way they think about their project, and involve communities in the design process.
Her passion for education design began in 2003 with the design of an exemplar primary school for the Department for Education’s Schools for the Future initiative; this led to the multi award-winning Lairdsland Primary School in Glasgow. She is interested in the pedagogy of space and the ways in which the physical environment enables different ways of teaching and learning to take place.
Outside of the practice, Michál regularly contributes to academic and professional institutions as an external examiner and guest lecturer. She is one of Design Council Cabe’s Built Environment Expert (BEE) and is also on design review panels for the London Legacy Development Corporation and Design South East. Since 2008 she has been an architectural trustee for Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust.
