Amid urban trends of maximising build-up, the design preserves the human scale of the existing house. Khoo Guo Jie
Maple House (named after the street it sits on) shelters a couple and their child from city bustle, offering living spaces that each open into a garden. Amid the urban tendency to maximize build-up, the design preserves the human scale of the existing house, with only measured adjustments for the family’s needs. The familiar pitched roof and rubble boundary are retained, while spaces unfold along a hall embraced by nature at both front and rear. Through the sensitive reuse of scale and materials, the house honours a bygone era while offering a setting for contemporary tropical living.
