The Shelter ADU in Brays Oaks, Houston, is a series of secondary dwelling units designed not only to provide places of residence but also to act as places of refuge to the greater community during extreme weather events. The Shelter ADU responds to tornadoes, floods, and hurricanes. It shelters the renters, owners, and evacuees from nearby jurisdictions. With ten variants to fit single-family lots, the Shelter ADU aims at breaking the nuclear family bubble, spurring social interaction and creating a stronger, more connected community amid climate challenges.
