Emerging from Lake Austin, the Diffuse Dock features two boat slips beneath a curving canopy of perforated stainless-steel panels. The form—a framework of ribs spanned by a thin, perforated surface—was inspired by the organic structure of seashells, whose curves and distortions serve to strengthen and stiffen the shells. Fourteen steel ribs support perforated stainless-steel panels that vary in openness to balance light, ventilation, and strength. The shimmering dock reflects and refracts its surroundings; its tone and texture change with the quality of the surrounding water, light, and air.
