Tokonoma and Kakejiku, traditionally hidden in Japanse interiors, reimagined and relocated into the garden as a public focal point . GoodDesignWorks LLC
This radical transformation of a 140-year-old Kyoto townhouse repositions the traditional tokonoma and scroll from the guestroom into the garden, fully visible from both the lounge and the street.Framed by a tiered floor and uninterrupted by walls or glass, they become a quiet focal point in a continuous indoor-outdoor space. Guided by the philosophy of Destructive Elegance, this spatial reversal dissolves boundaries and transforms private ritual into public architecture. The result is a conceptual design that is open, inclusive, softly subversive, and reimagines tradition with refined restraint.
