58 villas are situated on an island in a new urban lakeside community in Chengdu, China. Transforming the urban typology of the row-house, each villa is “pinched” to create garden courtyards allowing views of the natural surroundings. The major axis of the villas link the street side with the lakeside along a curving spine, and with each shift off the path, a view is framed, or a room with a view is discovered. Together, the multiple villa types combine to create a new take on the urban typology, one that is adaptable to a hybrid site with semi-dense housing in a garden framework.
