Embodying core Islamic beliefs and values, Al- Ansar Mosque has long served the spiritual needs of the Singapore’s Muslim community. Located in Bedok, a neighbourhood in Eastern Singapore, the reconstruction of the Al-Ansar was carried out to modernise and update a beloved symbol of the local community. Over the years, the Mosque had aged along with the surrounding neighbourhood, with many of the original facilities are inadequate for the ageing population. The project aspired to create a community mosque, a place for Muslims and non-Muslims alike, which could facilitate a diverse array of activities including Islamic Learning, Social Development, Family and Youth Programmes, together with Religious Services. The new design features an exquisite covered community plaza, formed by a wide-span columnless cantilevered box that embraces the original prayer hall and minaret. The new cantilevered box appears to float above the plaza, with much of the mosque’s exterior adorned by an intricately patterned façade. The façade drew on Islamic heritage, manifesting in an Arabesque- inspired design that boasts undeniable aesthetic quality, while also allowing for improved natural light and ventilation to flow within the site. The revamped mosque now accommodates up to 4500 worshippers, fulfilling the needs of the growing local Muslim community.
