The PASSAGE was erected on the grounds of an old plantation which is now an HBCU. It’s crafted from upcycled paper elements with grass harvested by students and faculty from the original plantation grounds and symbolizes a commitment to preserving this history. The materials of the structure are designed to organically degrade over time allowing the architecture to fuse with the inevitable loss of memory. The materials, means, and methods of construction reflect a common responsibility to address certain troubling narratives as part of the architect’s responsibility.
