The new Middelkerke Casino, on the Belgian coast, is a happening place. The shell-shaped building is a landmark that gives the public space it occupies back to the community through, for example, the publicly accessible central courtyard and the way in which the nearby dyke has been incorporated into the design. The building’s spiral form pulls the existing fiber of the city into the project’s design. The public space around the project has been designed in harmony with the surroundings, but echoes the forms used in the building. The visitor is pulled inside in an organic way.
