The original brief requires a 20000m2 above-ground cultural center at a beautiful valley in Hebei province, China. In order not to contaminate the breathtaking scenery by massive built forms, the brief is challenged by turning most of the programs underground, hiding the vividness of cultural and commercial activities from the landscape. Only three pavilions are placed on the surface of a vast circular pond which acts as a "mirror" to reflect the surrounding. The permanent exhibition hall is relocated to the adjacent hill and becomes the final destination for a full view of the circular pond.
