At the junction between rational and poetic sits the ‘Treehouse’ whose name is derived from the manner in which sunlight gently dapples interior spaces, and from the way environmental principles have driven this project’s overall design. The replanning, refurbishment and extension of the 1890's worker's cottage re-engineers the house to accommodate 21st century requirements. The additions frame a central courtyard to allow for natural ventilation, winter sun to penetrate the rear pavilion and passively heat interior spaces, and to create a private internalised family retreat.
