Built in Chongqing’s core Shibati area in 1939, the project was originally a raw material factory owned by industrialist Liu Hongsheng, the ‘King of Matches’. The city-level heritage is an industrial relic noted for its Eclectic architecture. Given its derelict condition, GuocoLand China went for outright reconstitution, replacing all structural frameworks and using 1,475 pieces of original black tiles to rebuild its hip roof, brick arches and columns. Innovative technologies were introduced to revitalise the space, which is part of a conservation site designed by UNStudio and LWK + PARTNERS.
