This project addresses the challenge of providing an 80-bed girls’ dormitory on an aging campus of a secondary school in a rural region of Nigeria. The design utilizes local construction techniques in a new visual language with a progressive organization of beds, facilities, matron’s suites and gathering spaces to allow for community, security and empowerment for the young women. The circular forms house suites of multiple bedrooms, shared bathrooms and an intimate study/gather space. Passive building technology provides natural light and ventilation while protecting from seasonal heavy rains.
