Amphibious retrofit construction is a novel strategy to reduce displacement, loss and trauma caused by severe flooding in marginalized populations. Our Amphibious Research Pavilion furthers the development of buoyant foundations as a low-cost approach to flood mitigation. Working in synchrony with natural cycles of flooding, amphibious housing aligns with Indigenous cultural values in Canada and elsewhere. In the global context of rapid climate change, amphibious retrofits offer flood-prone communities an alternative to fear of flooding, by allowing them instead to live in harmony with water.
