Situated on a hillside in Santa Monica, this garden rethinks both the role and the materiality of the typical backyard. Organic and artificial landscapes blend together to create a garden courtyard space nestled into the hillside that acts as an extension of the house. Although many assert that we Los Angelenos don’t have seasons, this garden is layered with gravel, succulents, and grasses, designed to track the seasons with changing blooms. Some layers bloom in the spring, some in the summer or fall supporting a rich engagement of the seasons.
