The adaptive reuse of the Geneva Car Barn & Powerhouse transforms a dilapidated historic building into a cultural hub. Comprised of two distinct parts, the complex will house classroom spaces, a black box theater, and an event space. In adaptively reusing the Powerhouse, the design highlights layers of history while deftly inserting new program elements into the historic shell. The building’s decay and lack of seismic stability required the rehabilitation touch every surface. In adapting it as an arts event space, elements were introduced in a manner that respects the existing structure.
