Under the pressure of urbanization and population growth, there are rising concerns on traffic, safety, and homogeneity in sidewalks in Toronto. Our project identifies three issues that contribute to the failure of sidewalks in Toronto which are- stormwater, safety, and identity. Our goal is to rethink current underutilized and monofunctional sidewalks and consider new hybrid typologies in response to the issues. We propose a sidewalk design manual that includes top-down and bottom-up strategies as a proactive, replicable, and evolving mechanism for sidewalk revitalization projects.
