Termas El Jalabi is a proposal for thermal baths on Mexico’s Oaxaca coast. The 490 m2 building’s design is articulated as a loose sequence of monolithic building volumes linked by a breezy elevated timber walkway. A lightweight fly roof echoes the deck, lending protection from the elements and facilitating rain-water harvesting. The project takes inspiration from historical precedents such as the Roman baths and the Islamic hammam, incorporating the idea of an invigorating thermal sequence whereby water, vapor, and air temperatures progressively rise as users pass from one volume to the next.
