The old Gibellina, a town in Sicily, was completely razed by the 1968 Belice earthquake, The new Gibellina was rebuilt a few miles away, The Chiesa Madre (Mother Church) was designed by Ludovico Quaroni in 1972. The great sphere was chosen because “the symbolic perfection of the sphere is the universe, the infinite, the totality“.
