The A.B.C. Defense: Anchoring, Buffering, and Coexisting with Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs)
Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, faces rising Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) due to climate change. This project studies the Gilgit River watershed, where 9 glacial lakes threaten basin-wide communities through cascading accelerated flows and widespread inundation. We propose an A.B.C. framework: Anchoring stabilizes moraine dams by coupling biological structures with thermal regulators; Buffering reduces surges via diversion and dissipators; Coexisting enables flood-tolerant dual-use infrastructure. It reframes GLOFs from disasters into anticipated, absorbed, and transformed opportunities.
