Tonkin Liu's Centre of Excellence in York provides new facilities for the Minster's stonemasons. It is built around a private courtyard up against the city's medieval walls, so that passers-by can hear and see the masons at work. An undulating roof with an exposed timber structure unifies the buildings and provides ample opportunities for capturing shifting geometries and shadows with a camera. The commission aimed to illustrate both the architecture, and its inhabitation by the masons who work there.
