The project pioneers the concept of ‘Inhabited Infrastructure’. The Milford-on-Sea Beach Huts transform and re-imagine coastal sea defenses to provide a raised public promenade, with brightly coloured beach huts below. Critically, the project successfully integrates the practical without losing the simple joy of the traditional seaside. The result is a prototype for sustainable inhabited infrastructure. The design creatively integrates significant public benefits, including access ramps, public art and seating, whilst providing replacement beach huts that can resist a 1:200 storm event.
