Inspired by recent issues, THE EMIGRANT FACTORY situates under future Hong Kong where mass emigration has caused an extensive shortage of labour, a new border policy is proposed: They can only apply for foreign visas at the border. The HK International Airport turns into a factory that instantly receives and processes outbound visa applications while processing arriving immigrants on another level. The design translates the complexity of visa application physically into the existing border facility. The border is re-imagined as a complex system where people move like objects.
