Designers often team with real estate developers and owners to transform existing public spaces to attract tenants and visitors and foster a sense of community. The Winter Garden at 222 Berkeley, a 22-story Class A office and retail building, designed in 1991 by Robert A.M. Stern in Boston’s Back Bay, was underutilized. Spanning five-storeys and 5,100sf, the interior looked outdated. The designers embraced Stern’s neoclassical aesthetic, preserving the majesty of the daylit space while transforming it into a contemporary garden retreat that serves as a living room for the building.
