We won the competition for a new mixed-use Civic Center in Hengqing next to Macao, to be built in 2019. The site is limited, located between a crowded housing area and an open green park. Instead of putting nine programs into a solid building, we adopt a strategy to create a “void” for the high-density urban context, while integrating a variety of programs into one complex and interweaving energetic lives. The main public space, found on the lower level, is composed of three giant arch caves, coated with wood and bamboo panels, in order to create a transparent and open living room for urban life.
