“La Reja” is an investigation focused on how ornamental iron grills represent, not only its pragmatic utility in Puerto Rican housing, but also, because of unique patterns that characterize them, as a significant cue for memories. I decided to design a Cremation Center as a place that recognizes the act of remembrance of the deceased as a part of the self-healing process. Using elements found in Puerto Rico’s urban context, such as ornamental iron grills, not only creates a familiar atmosphere, but reconnects us with memories that reflect who we are and bonds us with a deceased loved one.
