Prairie Line Trail (PLT) is an extraordinary landmark of US history. In 1873, the Northern Pacific Railway made Tacoma a hub and realized Abraham Lincoln’s charter for a transcontinental railroad to Puget Sound. As the railroad began ridding itself of unused ROW, the University of Washington saw an opportunity to re-purpose this industrial infrastructure. The PLT provides the campus - a central commons; the city - a regional trail connecting the Brewery District with downtown and the waterfront; and the environment - harvesting of 42 acres of urban street runoff, returned clean to Puget Sound.
