An affordable housing community of 75 units for veterans and families, this project also provides an adoption/foster center, support services, community areas and extensive landscaping. The greatest challenge was to safely and sensitively house two distinct resident types, which was achieved through careful architectural moves. To deal with a desert climate of extremes, a novel approach to shading the south façade was completed via thermal wood. Part of a larger complex, this project occupies its vast site through a balance of density, open space and joyful colors that reflect its desert home.
