As the tallest tower in Beijing, CITIC Tower makes reference to the tapered form of a traditional Chinese communal vessel – the Zun – to create a modern link to China’s cultural past. This shape reconciles the tower’s exterior to the stepping of the cores at center, allows the supertall’s structure to take a wider stance against seismic loads at the base, and utilizes its radiused corners to minimize wind loading. At grade, the exterior shell flares out above the tower’s entries to break the scale of the tower and to provide seamless connectivity to the surrounding sites.
