Special challenges and issues that the Design and Construction team faced were inherent in the goal of creating a state-of-the-art 21st century space within late 19th to early 20th century industrial building, while maintaining the historic character of the structure. Constructed in 1912, the building’s original purpose had been to generate power and serve as an electrical substation. The design team worked closely with the Port of San Francisco, the National Park Service, and California’s State Historic Preservation Office to adapt the historic industrial structure for 21st century occupants.
