Intended to provide NYBG visitors a place where they can seek shade and recharge their mobile devices, the 8 solar sails, designed, engineered and installed by Pvilion, provide ample space to relax. Pvilion’s photovoltaic fabric generates electricity upon exposure to the sun. The solar arrays offset all of the energy used for under-canopy and path lighting around the structures. As part of New York City’s emission reduction efforts, 7 of the canopies contribute energy directly to the city’s power grid. One off-grid structure charges a bank of batteries used for lighting and device charging.
