Now and again a no-compromise architect comes along that does everything from cladding to curtains and couches to cutlery. Arne Jacobsen was one such architect. Famous in his own lifetime and a legend after his death with such classics as the Egg, the Swan, the Ant and of course the Series 7 chair. This sequence of photographs talks to the genius of the 7 chair: 9 sheets of veneer; a formed shell; the final custom paint, or varnish. On purpose I omit the final ‘display’ photograph. Others can do that. As revolutionary as the chair was in 1955, it remains infinitely successful today.
