The Palhano Ecomarket is located in Londrina, Brazil. Aiming to create a milestone for the city and a reference in sustainable architecture, the project is under the LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design®) and applies concepts of illumination and natural ventilation, as well as the use of local materials and resources, wide energetical economy and the rational use of water. The market was conceived to aggregate different food commerces, just like in traditional municipal markets found in big cities. The selected region is located in front of an artificial lake in a prime area of the city. A big challenge was to overcome the 25m acclivity of the lot, respecting the maximum height of 7,5m imposed by the local legislation. After extensive excavation, the project managed to camouflage all the structure of services and the garages, leaving only the commercial floor area in sight. On the upper level, a big observation deck with hanging gardens accommodates restaurants with a privileged view of the surroundings. The core idea of the concept created by the architect is to develop the self-esteem of the citizens, through the consolidation of the project as a symbol of sustainable development for the city.
