Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre is an iconic expression of Surrey’s commitment to improving the quality of life for people living and working in one of Canada’s fastest growing cities. The Grandview Heights neighbourhood is expected to grow over the next decade, and the Aquatic Centre is considered the first step in a larger vision for a campus of wellness, learning, healthy living, and sports excellence in the area. The City had envisioned a destination facility attracting athletes, international sporting events, and families alike. HCMA Architecture + Design pushed the limits of wood as a structural element to create an innovative catenary roof design that realizes this vision. The new facility carefully balances the needs of recreational users with pro-athletic amenities without compromising the unique needs of either group. The Centre includes a 50m lap pool with diving platforms designed to FINA standards for competitions, a leisure pool, two hot pools, a sauna, a waterslide, a fitness centre, a poolside café, and seating for up to 900 spectators. For a pool of such size, Grandview’s roof undulations were driven by functional needs rather than aesthetic goals – an inspired union of form and function. The result is an aquatic centre housing world class.
