Grid-locked Training Recreational Education Center │ City of Newark, New Jersey 22,000 SF | Gymnasium | fitness | childcare | classrooms | meeting rooms | study Inspired by the geometric collision of the urban grid of the City of Newark, adjacent to neighboring Olmsted-designed Weequahic Park, the Training Recreation Education Center (TREC) is an iconic community center for the residents in this southwest corner of the city. The building form is two interlocking triangles representing a portion of the city at the shift in the urban grid around the park. One triangle is open and transparent at the meeting and classrooms. The other triangle is solid and opaque at the gymnasium and recreation functions. This iconic community center is intended to be the civic anchor for the adjacent community and urban housing.
