The Armadale Residence is the ultimate expression of Rob Mills’ ability to integrate architecture with interiors. It is the architect’s own home, designed first and foremost to promote well-being. Three generations of the same family live here - everything is planned for their privacy and respectful interaction. The management of natural and artificial light was of supreme importance. Orientation on the site and maximising ventilation minimised the need for heating and cooling in Melbourne’s extremes of climate. Sustainability is integral. The build was specified to endure. Designed to perfect the home’s acoustic properties; concrete slab, masonry walls, effective insulation and engineered glazing create an inner sanctuary. A remarkable, unique course of water running from the exterior to the interior actively contributes to the occupant’s psychological health and mindfulness. The home features the most refined use of concrete in RMA’s architecture to date. The uplifted shapes of the horizontal elements seem to gently cradle the slabs behind. The columns taper and expand almost playfully. The spiral staircase achieves a new standard of lightness, the finesse of the balustrade and the rhythm of the staircase creates an almost spiritual axis. The Armadale Residence epitomises innovation in its transformation of former warehouse space into a five-bedroom family home – a new achievement in high density, urban living. It creates a new standard for great living with the utmost regard for its inhabitant’s well- being and happiness.
