MOKO, previously called Grand Century Place, is situated in Mongkok East, consisting of a seven storey shopping mall of 67,000 sqm. Mongkok is a zone of trend and energy, but at the same time a jammed and choking old district. The site is somewhat remote from the heart of Mongkok and elevated above the railway tracks. The major pedestrian draw to the site is through the pedestrian footbridge from downtown to the railway station adjoining the mall, where people often passed through without lingering to upper levels of the mall. The previous circulation is primarily organized around the circular atrium, giving oneself loss of orientation as well as cutting off the flow towards the northern wing of the mall. We injected new elements of nature to transform the mall into a pleasant “Place” for people to stay and spend time. The refurbishment project of the old shopping mall took inspirations from nature. Delicate touches of trees, leaves, petals, river, cloud and stars can be seen at every corner, also echoing the theme to explore dramatic scenery in nature. The use of indoor greenery and natural material like timber enhances the nature feeling, aiming to refresh and soften this dense city.
