The Armadale Residence is the ultimate expression of Rob Mills’ ability to integrate architecture with highly resolved interior design. Formerly an industrial building, it is now the architect’s own home. Creating the best quality of life for the occupants gave rise to innovation and great technical achievement in the use of light. The placement of the main living area facilitated the creation of a generous, commanding interior space with 3.4 metre ceiling heights. A highly sculptural spiral staircase sits under glazing, unifying the levels by filtering the light from above. Rich textures and highly sensual finishes dominate and delight. The rendered walls are velvety. Floors are in Fior di Pesco Carnico, a grey-white veined marble. A centrepiece brass kitchen creates drama and excitement, anchoring warm brass details and brass linings for door frames. A remarkable refuge called the Winter Room relies on richly finished timber panels and heavily recessed windows providing an entirely different rhythm. There is a serene sense of luxe achieved through the highly considered selection of materials, finishes and objects and the mastery of how these interact - heightening the sense of calm while establishing the character of the home. Well-being is reinforced by an intense liveability.
