In gritty inner-City Melbourne, Rob Mills Architecture has created remarkable spaces devoted to physical and psychological well- being. Two unloved industrial buildings have been transformed, creating a synthesis between architecture and brand while challenging what is conventional in design for the world of yoga and pilates. The project is close to Rob Mills heart, the businesses are owned with his wife Lucinda, a yogi. Every aspect of the brief was developed in consultation. The resulting design is a masterful balance of thoughtful, crafted design and the vocation of this space. The Pilates studio presents a level of sophistication rarely seen in exercise studios. It is intensely sensuous and richly textured with polished concrete floors, smoked oak joinery and bespoke furniture. Hand woven French fabric, Turkish carpets, polished brass and carefully curated art and objects stimulate visitor’s sensory awareness. A palette of warm earth tones reassures and welcomes anyone who enters this urban oasis, a bamboo garden reinforces the link to natural beauty. The Pilates equipment is class leading and the technological sophistication continues with the specification of the climate control system which processes fresh air to the optimum, constant temperature and perfect humidity for the activity of the studio.
