ClientChicago Shakespeare Theater

Opened in September 2017, The Yard is a next-generation performance venue that reflects Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s multi-faceted artistic vision. Consisting of approximately 35,000 sf, the project introduces a new flexible theater and entrance lobby connected to the existing Chicago Shakespeare Theater at Navy Pier. Located adjacent to the existing theater, The Yard is artfully tucked beneath the signature tent structure above the existing parking garage. The design smartly repurposes the existing Skyline Stage by constructing a fully enclosed, indoor theater chamber beneath the landmark white dome, utilizing the existing stage house and backstage support spaces. The year-round, flexible venue can be configured in a variety of shapes and sizes with audience capacities ranging from 150 to 850, defining the audience-artist relationship to best serve each production. The lobby connection is a glazed two-story reception space faces directly south with magnificent views of Lake Michigan. In order to mitigate glare and heat gain, a custom electrochromic façade was designed. Daylight sensors on the roof allow the façade to gradually tint as sunlight passes across its southern face.
