The New Academic Building, a 211,518-square- foot, state-of-the-art, interdisciplinary classroom and office building for the Rutgers University School of Arts and Sciences, is located in the heart of the University’s original College Avenue academic campus in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The new Academic Building houses eight previously scattered departments of Rutgers’ School of Arts and Sciences that were relocated and consolidated in the new building. It features 2,500 seats of classroom space, including four large, 280- person lecture halls; two medium-sized, 120- person general classrooms; several small flat-floor classrooms; two Technology Enabled Active Learning (TEAL) classrooms; a computer center; a learning center with active tutoring spaces; small seminar rooms; and individual faculty offices. The building is designed to facilitate informal collaboration among faculty and students in a series of instructional spaces that support today’s varied learning styles and encourage cross-departmental collaboration. Several key sustainable design features achieve lower life-cycle costs and reduced energy consumption. These include heat recovery, high-efficiency boilers and chillers, low-velocity below-floor displacement ventilation, active daylighting, and lighting controls. The project has been certified LEED-NC Certified Silver.
