Located in the heart of the B.C. Children’s and Women’s Hospital campus in Vancouver, British Columbia, the new 59,400 square-metre Teck Acute Care Centre (TACC) features a new design standard in healthcare. Employing evidence-based design strategies, the design approach for this state-of-the-art facility emphasizes patient-and-family-centred care by creating a nurturing, welcoming and comfortable environment integral to all patients, visitors and staff. Providing exceptional specialized care for the most seriously ill children and complex obstetrical cases, the centre accommodates eight levels of clinical spaces, including an emergency department, inpatient units, paediatric intensive care, medical imaging, haematology/oncology, satellite pharmacy, procedural suites, high-risk labour and delivery suite, milk handling room, and a neo- natal intensive care unit. A key design consideration for the interior was a sense of “playfulness” to engage children of all ages. From the treatment areas to patient rooms and playrooms, the use of vibrant colour and engaging graphics, fosters a positive and healing space for patients as they undergo difficult treatment. Throughout the facility, there is also access to direct natural light as well as vistas of outdoor landscaping and view gardens, with patient and staff-accessible gardens on multiple levels, providing a quiet escape for patients, family and staff.
