Can architecture help an alcoholic’s quest for sobriety? The sunken pit of an abandoned quarry on the edge of the Pacific Ocean is repurposed to represent the metaphorical journey of an alcoholic from isolation at “rock bottom” to the elevated perspective of a fuller, more ordered life. The architecture exploits modern psychology and ancient archetypes to enable a persuasive life changing experience. As well as bespoke buildings and structures, smaller keepsakes that represent key aspects of the recovery broaden the architectural scope to reach into the addict’s personal environment.
