The property of this renovation project is situated in a traditional Taiwanese ‘Bu-Deng’ apartment building, a type of multi-dwelling unit rapidly built in Taipei's downtown area during the postwar 1960s. Leveraging the cultural roots of the site's surroundings, we implemented several notions about time. For instance, we replaced the waterspout pipe with rust-proof rebar to make the flow of time obvious. Besides, austere surfaces on beams and columns were preserved without extra decoration, to present the building's age and prevent unnecessary waste.
