I had the idea to photograph the Neue Nationalgalerie (Mies v. der Rohe and restored by David Chipperfield) at dusk to demonstrate the 'floating roof' when the daytime reflections disappear and the interior exhibition space is revealed. The sun produced deep shadows during a midday scout with a handheld camera. I spontaneously embraced and celebrated the stark contrast, matching the expressive and bold architecture, forsaking my usual quiet subtle approach. The final ensemble of midday and dusk images portrays the building's distinct character and clever yet straightforward design.
