The project sits on Madrone Ridge overlooking a broad valley in Sonoma County. During our initial explorations of the area, we were struck by the ways that water had weathered and split large stones on the site. The power of water acting on the land became the building’s driving design element. Architectural components are all responses to site conditions (wet/dry seasons, views, native flora/fauna, periodic wildfires, etc.), which also preserve the site’s ecology and beauty. In the rainy season, water flows off the folded roof and into catchment basins between split building volumes.
