In many remote villages of China, the government promotes distributed sewage stations to treat rural sewage, but management and funding constraints make it difficult to meet standards. In the Sanxiushan Village domestic wastewater treatment station upgrade project, tailwater was ecologically treated through a terraced wetland to achieve higher discharge levels at a low cost. This practice improves the environment, provides a safe place for children to play in the water, and provides irrigation water for farmland. The project has become a model for sustainable development in the local villages.
