Rising sea levels are encroaching on South Carolina's marshes, vital habitats for endangered species, natural hurricane buffers, and key carbon sinks. The Southern Bastion, situated at the marsh-sea boundary, aims to protect and restore this ecosystem. It features a lab for 3D printing artificial reefs, which are gradually deployed to reduce erosion and rebuild the marsh. The architecture is designed to float, minimizing its impact on the fragile environment while preserving the marsh's ecological and protective functions.
