The Vuosaari Bioenergy Heating Plant fulfils a vital basic need by generating 25% of Helsinki’s district heating sustainably. It reduces annual CO₂ emissions by 700,000 tonnes. The plant’s architecture aims to convey the importance of its mission. The compact layout is based on process flow, leaving room for future site development. To soften the plant’s impact on the landscape, the buildings decrease in size towards the site’s edges. Through detailing and form following function, the architecture seeks coherence, integrity and timelessness. Natural light flows into interior spaces.
