Peter Zumthor's Kolumba Museum in Cologne is an assemblage of gallery spaces of different scales and proportions, sometimes gently lit through curtained windows, at other times making use of dramatic artificial lighting to highlight particular objects. Gallery walls are formed from polished plaster but in two spaces, the cloakroom and reading room, wood veneers – maple and walnut respectively – are used to embrace the visitor.
